My outiline

English for Academic Purposes and study skills- Outline

  • Purpose: To summarize the main features of EAP
  • Thesis: EAP involves communication skills  required in formal education systems
  • Audience: ESL students and teacher at higher education systems. 

1- Definition of EAP
         A-History: First recorded use of the term in 1974.

2- Range of settings:
               a. Students may need EAP
                        i. higher education studies
                        ii. pre-departure courses

3 - Course elements
a.       Formal teaching programmes
b.      Self-access situations
c.       Distance-learning materials
d.      Computer-assisted language learning

4- Coverage:
               a. TENOR (teaching of English for No Obvious Reason) = EGP (English for General Purposes)
               b. ESP (English for Specific Purposes) 
                        i. English for Occupational /Vocational/ Professional Purposes (EOP / EVP / EPP)
                        ii. English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
                              a) common core/ study skills = EGAP
                                        1. Study skills: Abilities, techniques, and strategies used when reading, writing or listening for study purposes. (Richards, Platt and Platt, 1992).
                              b) subject-specific = ESAP.
                                        1. Subject-specific English: language needed for a particular academic subject (language structure, vocabulary, particular skills needed                                          for the subject, and appropriate academic conventions)
